Plastic yard signs

Install & care

How to display your plastic yard sign

A good message still needs a good spot. Here is a practical guide to placing and caring for a corrugated-style plastic yard sign so people can actually read it.

Pick the right spot

  • Face the street or sidewalk with the least obstruction (bushes, parked cars, trash bins).
  • Keep the bottom edge a few inches above soil splash and mulch.
  • Avoid blocking driveways, hydrants, or HOA-restricted parkways — check local rules.
  • For porches, lean or hang only if your hardware is rated for wind; most signs are designed for ground stakes.

Staking basics

  1. Use wire H-stakes or step stakes sized for your sign (common for political/yard plastics).
  2. Push stakes into soil until the sign sits upright without wobble.
  3. On hard ground, water the soil first or use a rubber mallet — do not hammer the plastic face.
  4. In windy areas, use two stakes and avoid sail-like angles.

Weather & longevity

Plastic yard signs are built for outdoor display, but sun, ice, and storms wear any print. Bring signs in during severe weather when you can, and remount if corners start to curl. Extreme UV over years will fade ink — that is normal for outdoor plastics.

Readability tips

  • High-contrast text (light on dark or dark on light) wins from the curb.
  • Fewer, larger lines beat a novel.
  • 24" x 18" is easier to read at distance; 18" x 12" suits closer garden beds.
